We can’t believe that’s almost time for another NAHB International Builders’ Show! The 2022 event will be held February 8-10th in Orlando, FL. Your social feeds will soon be flooded with all the events and sessions that you should attend at IBS, but we thought we’d celebrate registration kick-off by reminding you of six things you should never do at IBS – this year or any other. Whether you are a first-timer or a show veteran, these tips will help you maximize your IBS experience.
You are going to do a LOT of walking – wear comfortable shoes, or at least pack a pair in your day bag. Even if you never make it onto the actual show floor and stick to mostly educational sessions, you will still put several miles on your Apple Watch or FitBit each day.
Multiple football fields of vendors and suppliers await you. It sounds incredibly exciting, and it can be! It can also become a big drain on your energy level and, without a plan, you can leave after several hours not having accomplished too much. Especially if this is your first time at the show, you’ll get much more from attending the educational sessions or connecting with people in the hallways. I recommend hitting the floor on one of your last days there, and not your first.
Everyone has to eat – so don’t do it in your hotel room via room service. It’s an excellent excuse (if you need one) to meet other people and share ideas. For the past few years, Will Duderstadt and I have also hosted an early AM breakfast meeting for marketers and leaders. Next year’s meetup may look a little different (like an outdoor venue), so keep your eyes peeled for more details.
It is very common for people to get up and leave for a variety of reasons during an educational session. Sometimes it’s simply to use the restroom or take an emergency phone call – but many times attendees are voting with their feet. You’ll likely have two sessions at the same time that pique your interest. Pick the one you feel most strongly about, but don’t hesitate to pivot 10 minutes in if the speaker is not living up to your expectations. Remember, this trip is using your time, money, and energy. Never feel bad about choosing how you invest it.
A couple years ago someone I actually interact with on a regular basis in the virtual world came up and began immediately apologizing for coming up to say hello in the hallway. “I’m sure you’re super busy and I don’t want to slow you down…” Are you kidding me?! Meeting people (old or new) face to face is pure luxury in our world today. Maximize it at this year’s show and I guarantee you’ll end up with more great takeaways than the last time you came.
A reoccurring theme in many of these tips is how valuable your time is while at the show. Standing in line to get a replacement for a lost ticket or registering (especially during the first two days of the show) is simply maddening. Make sure you pack your ticket/badge before you even pack your underwear. If you are planning to register on-site, wake up as early as possible to avoid the crowds.
Did I miss something? Have another suggestion for others?
